The City of Cambridge
The lands that would eventually become the settlements for Hespeler, Galt, Preston, and Blair were originally granted to the Six Nations by Britain in 1784. During the 1790’s, the Six Nations sold off parts of their grant and these parts formed the roots of the City of Cambridge we know today.
The City of Cambridge was formed on January 1, 1973 with the amalgamation of the City of Galt, the Town of Preston, the Town of Hespeler, and the settlement of Blair.
At the time, this decision wasn’t very popular among residents of the different communities, and to this day, they are still primarily referred to by their individual, historic names by locals.
A resident might say they are from Cambridge when speaking to someone from outside the region, but when speaking to another local they will likely say they live in Hespeler, Galt, or Preston.
To this day, Blair still feels like a separate village, and the City of Cambridge boasts 3 fantastic historic downtown areas which each have their own feel.
As much as there are still distinctive historical characteristics in the original communities, Cambridge has also developed and flourished in the years since it’s incorporation.
Along with it’s historical charm, today Cambridge is a modern, exciting city with a population of over 125,000.
Cambridge is located in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, and is part of one of our province’s fastest growing economies.
Conveniently located along highway 401 and a short 45 minute commute from Toronto, Cambridge continues to grow and has a promising economic future.
Whether you choose Hespeler, Galt, Preston, Blair, or somewhere in between, Cambridge is a great place to live, work, and play.
